Back in 1967, it was all-change in the Spencer Davis Group camp. Brothers Steve and Muff Winwood had left for pastures new (namely, Traffic). Undeterred, Spencer and drummer Phil York recruited youthful yet very soulful singer Eddie Hardin (fresh from Mod hopefuls A Wild Uncertainty) and dapper guitarist Phil Sawyer. Seeing out their Fontana period with the Top 40 psych-pop nugget ‘Time Seller’ before ushering in a new era with United Artists.

In due course, the new-look SDG issued a string of memorable 45s – the soulful ‘Mr. Second Class’, the beguiling ‘After Tea’ and the Mod-tastic ‘Short Change’, as well as a German-only single ‘(Aquarius) der Wassermann’ – as well as contributing several exclusive tracks to the soundtrack to Swinging London movie ‘Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush’. Meanwhile, guitarist Sawyer was replaced by Ray Fenwick.

In spring 1968, the band finally unveiled their acclaimed fourth album, suitably entitled ‘With Their New Face On’. Musically, the LP ran the gamut of popular styles, from Mod pop to blues rock, psychedelia and beyond. It was to be the only album to properly capture this line-up of the band.

RPM Records are now proud to offer an exclusive chance to own a double vinyl reissue of ‘With Their New Face On’ (the stereo mix), with added tracks from the ‘Mulberry Bush’ soundtrack as well as bonus tracks and mono single mixes.

Housed in a gatefold sleeve which replicates and expands on the original UK artwork, this really is a must-have item for any discerning collector of cool late 60s music. The packaging includes an edited version of Andy Neill’s sleeve-notes (from last year’s 3-CD set, ‘Taking Out Time’).
